Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a diverse Title I high school located in Brooklyn, New York. It is one of a handful of public high schools in NYC that only admit recent immigrants; many of our students enter the ninth grade just a few weeks, or even days, after first moving to the United States.
Our students come from over thirty countries around the world -- Yemen, Honduras, Nepal, Bangladesh, the Ivory Coast, and Haiti, to name a few.
They also speak well over thirty different languages, all at different levels of English language proficiency. As opposed to more traditional ESL programs, students are not pulled out of their classes. Instead, all of our students learn English through their content courses such as math, science, literature, social studies, dance, and art. Students work collaboratively to help one another with both their language skills and their understanding of life in this new country.
My Project
The secret to online learning? Take it offline! Help my students and I beat screen fatigue by helping us to get copies of graphic novels to read at home and at school.
This project will provide all 75 of my students copies of two amazing graphic novels, Boxers & Saints, by the talented author and artist Gene Luen Yang.
Boxers & Saints are two parallel stories told from two different perspectives.
In the past, students have loved the adventure, the characters, and the experience of reading Boxers & Saints together as a community! Furthermore, with a roster of 75 unique English Language Learners, these graphic novels meet students where they're at and are a great option for creating a differentiated curriculum with learners at different English literacy levels.
