This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have just finished reading Sue Monk Kidd's coming of age in South Carolina novel, The Secret Life of Bees. For those of you who have not yet picked up this New York Times Bestseller set in 1964, the heroine, Lily, runs away from her tyrannical father, springs her African American nanny out of jail, and heads for a bee farm run by the enigmatic Boatwright sisters. Kidd's lucid and imaginative prose truly captures your heart as told from the perspective of 14-year-old self-loathing/romantic Lily. My 9th graders in Watts would eat this book alive and lick the honey off their fingers if only I had a class set. The novel touches upon all of the issues that my students are itching to talk about, but other literature just doesn't give us the context: - racism - feminism - religion - depression & suicide - interracial relationships - missing or deceased family members - harsh parents - running away - jail - romance - family - unity - belonging Please help me fund a class set of this magnificent book so that my students' literacy levels and self-awareness will increase. Thank you!!
