My students are an awesome group of third grade service workers. We are Team Paws! It's our goal to change the world with kindness. Even the smallest kind act can mean a lot; hold the door, smile at someone, use your manners, be humble, and be kind, always.
In my classroom, my students understand that what they do and say matters.
They know their actions can make a difference. As members of Team Paws, they learn we truly do rise by lifting others. Our motto, spread kindness, is what makes being a part of Team Paws so special and important. Team Paws is a group of 30 little kids giving back to our community through volunteerism.
Not only that, but my girls and boys are our nation's next scientists, teachers, engineers, factory workers, cashiers, managers, doctors, and more. My students are bright-minded and curious. They want to explore and learn about the world around them. Regardless of what drives them, it's my goal to make sure that all of my kids feel safe, seen, heard, confident and celebrated.
My Project
All of my kids are different, beautiful, unique, and diverse. They all possess many wonderful gifts. In my classroom, we say daily affirmations that promote positive self-talk. We are practicing self-love in 3rd grade.
I am kind.
I am hard-working. I am enough. I am perfect just the way I was made. I am thoughtful. I am a good friend. I am smart. I matter. I am beautiful. I am unique.
This is how we start our day each morning. I always tell my kids negative self-talk is not allowed and even the words we say inside our brains, to ourselves, should be kind. Always.
My students will reflect upon the things that make them beautiful, unique, and perfectly imperfect. Their observations will be recorded in digital writing that will be paired with a picture of him or herself and displayed in the frames requested in this project.
Now picture this...
Each child will select an "I am" statement that I will write on the palm of his or her hand. Next, with hand outstretched, I will take a photograph of each child with the primary focus zooming in on his or her hand.
It might say... I am smart, I am brave, I am a good friend, etc.
The kids will use multimedia to create a digital story or Word Cloud, that explains to the reader all of the things that make him or her beautiful and unique. The photograph and Word Cloud will be displayed together in the frames.
Now, more than ever, it's our responsibility to teach kids the importance of self-love while also teaching them to be empathetic enough to see the beauty in others.
