My students need STEM related chapter books. We are creating book clubs to promote literacy in our Science classes. These books range in scientific content, as well as reading level.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Previous to middle school, most of our students have little experience with a library system and we are changing their perspective on our Literacy Room/Little Library. Our students have not had similar opportunities, activities, or experiences that many elementary students get to experience in library programming. We would like to change that in their middle school years!
One of our disciplinary goals is to provide opportunities for students to experience more narrative stories and making connections to other content areas.
Our school may not have a library, but we have started to grow one in our literacy classroom. We would like to encourage more readership in our 'library' by utilizing our space with unique programming tied to literacy. My students are awesome and diverse, and they deserve the best opportunities to make our community even stronger!
My Project
We are building a bridge between science and literacy in our middle school classes. We have learned that students are never too old for read-alouds! Our students love being read to and being transported into the world of imagination. Last year, we read a few science related stories before our science fair and it was a huge hit. This year we would like to create real world connections to STEM, as well as teach the importance of reading sci-fi and books with scientific concepts.
Why teach science with chapter books?
Some students struggle with reading and science. Having this group reading opportunity will offer students a connection to real-word contexts through a narrative and entice students to have positive feelings about STEM topics and literacy! Surrounding our students with scientific theories in a new light will be very exciting!! We are so excited for this opportunity for our students to be creative and to express a positive message about STEM related fields.
