My students are very inquisitive and hard-working. It is a joy teaching them and seeing them make new discoveries.
Even though our school is a Title I school, most of my students come to school with a positive mindset and ready to work.
My students love to read because the exposure to new places and things are endless. Many books that they enjoy reading help them to better understand life and prepare them for coming of age.
Seventh-grade is a tough age, they are kind of “stuck” in the middle. They are not sure what end of the spectrum they are at, with a variety of behavior from very juvenile to some more mature teenage behavior. I strive to make our classroom, one where they feel safe, cared about, and comfortable voicing their opinions and thoughts. Even though we are very diverse in many ways, I want my kids to recognize that we have so much to learn from one another, we blend into a perfect family.
My classes will study the novel, The Running Dream, while also using it to practice our reading comprehension, writing skills, characterization, setting, plot development, and presentation skills. This novel will pull the students through the pages with passion and empathy. My students will learn about prosthetics and cerebral palsy without it ever seeming like a lesson.
We will be reading and analyzing the novel as a class, promoting discussion, and bonding with one another.
Students will write about the characters, plot elements, and make predictions about what is to come in the novel. We will also be doing group work on empathy and why it is so important within our society. This book encompasses not only academic standards but also social ones too. The students will come away from this book with a surprising ending and feeling very inspired.
