Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine making a PB&J sandwich without bread? Or driving a car without gas?
I teach in inner-city California and my students are at the forefront of social change as they fight to close the achievement gap in our nation.
Our students are 99% African American, and over 50% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
Our charter middle school is developing our students with the tools to be successful not only in high school but to attend and succeed in college. Given our means as a school they do not receive the same allocations, specifically to technology and books as other schools in the state.
With recent budget cuts, some teachers are literally without bathroom breaks, so our supply list is a struggle also.
Our students are incredibly energetic and have an undying want to learn. They understand what it is to be a life long learner. Science excites them and history gets them constantly thinking and analyzing. They understand the challenges that lie ahead of them and they see education as a means of power and responsibility for their future.
My Project
I have purchased a variety of classroom materials from sharpeners, markers, colored pencils, and incentives for students. Having the proper materials to carry out lesson plans will help change students' lives because it allows the students to experience the full lesson that the teacher provides.
By having materials offered to them in the classroom, students can obtain knowledge and produce high quality work in a stress-free environment. Many students struggle with a lack of educational resources at home, and I want to make sure they have plenty when they are at their safe haven.
In our history and science classes, we will use our supplies to make engaging graphic organizers with our markers and colored pencils. We will push and reward ourselves with snacks, and we will be enthralled by BrainPop presentations on the computer.
Students should have everything they need to be successful in a classroom.
By having more materials in the classroom, we will be one step closer to reaching our goals and have one less stress factor students have to deal with. When students feel they are without proper materials, their confidence goes down. I want them to focus on their successes.
