Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember kindergarten? Do you remember sitting on the rug listening to stories, building with blocks, reading to a friend, and counting everything you could? So much of what we do is done on the rug. This is the heart of the classroom. This is where each day begins and ends.
We have the best students!
They are eager to learn and try new things. The majority of our students speak english as a second language. The economy has hit these families particularly hard. Many students are not able to attend preschool due to their parents work schedules that change so often. About one-third of my class signed up for kindergarten on the first day of school or later. It was a surprise to many of the parents how academic kindergarten has become. To bridge this gap we are working hard in the classroom and with parents so that the students can be successful. Our parents have been very responsive. We are working on learning essential skills and being responsive to the needs of each child. Hopefully everyone is learning that learning is fun and it doesn't just happen at school.
My Project
Right now we have an old rug with games printed on it. It is hard to see this as a place to learn when you see it initially. It is even hard to clean. We need a rug that gives everyone a place to sit. It sets the tone when you see a place for everyone as well as letters on it. This is the place where we start each day. This is the place where new concepts are introduced. This is the place where we gather for stories and play. It truly is the heart of the classroom. Even when we are working at tables, there is probably someone on the rug. Sometimes students just want to be away from the group. This is a safe place to sit and do their work. When you are feeling too wiggly to sit in your chair you can work on the rug. You can't fall off of the rug!
This project is important because these students deserve more than an old rug to work on.
They deserve a place where there is room for everyone to sit. They deserve a place in the center of the classroom that sets the tone for learning. They don't know they need it. That is why we as adults need to advocate for them. These are wonderful children that deserve a comfortable rug to work, sing, learn, and play on.
