Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom is anything but typical! I teach 3 classes of 6th grade students. Each class is in my room for approximately 72 minutes. Within those 72 minutes I teach Reading, Writing, and Social Studies. Each period is filled with numerous activities related to all three subjects.
I am very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to have these children in my life.
I have been a teacher for several years and can easily say that the students I teach this year are the most compassionate and needy children I have ever taught.
The school in which I work is in the heart of Chicago. Many of the children come from hard working immigrant families. All of the children qualify for free federal lunches which means that even though their parents are employed they still make less than the national average.
The students in my classroom are eager to learn and have proven that by the daily attendance rate. During the past three months my students have been present in class 99.2%. This is proof to me that not only the families but also the children are serious about education.
The majority of the students did not learn English as their first language. Many of the students still struggle between the Spanish and English Language.
My Project
I believe that my students would benefit from the requested 5 Chromebooks and 10 sets of headphones in the classroom. I have ample resources in regards to Internet learning programs but do not have the tool necessary for the students to access the wonderful sites. The I have several students that have been diagnosed with various learning difficulties and the use of technology would be a huge benefit to them. If the technology was available to the students they would have access to reading materials that are at their individual lexile scores. The technology that I believe that would benefit my students the most are chrome books. The chrome books are easy for the students to navigate. Students would be able to relocate to "special" areas of the classroom to read rather than be stuck at a computer stations. If the students are comfortable with their learning environment - they will be more successful.
If my students become advanced readers they will have a better chance of becoming holistic adults.
Their futures are not set in stone and having the ability to become great readers will guide their pathways to success. I am not a teacher to teach for only today---I look at it as a opportunity to change the outlook of the future. What I do today can change what happens tomorrow.
