Mrs. Holloway from Mobile AL is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need payment assistance with NBCT component fees to obtain National Board Certification for my students to learn more, improve my teaching practices, and demonstrate my commitment to excellence as an educator.

I began teaching at MCTS by choice because I felt my abilities would be more beneficial within a middle school setting. Within my school, 80 to 90% of my students are reading at least two levels below their current grade level and Math performance is at least one or more grade levels below. With or without questionable school ranking/grading legislation, the MCTS has performed in the bottom tier of schools statewide for many years. The physical structure of the building needs a great deal of repair, if not rebuilding. MCTS also has a major challenge with minimum to no parent participation.
It moves me to be a better teacher when I see my students eager to learn and meet goals set by administration, teachers, and staff.
Within the three years that I have been teaching at MCTS test scores within special education have increased and the school has moved off the school failing list. I am lucky to be working with these students and to see them smile when told they have accomplished a goal that the school has been working towards for years is amazing.
I'm requesting funding for National Board Certification components fees because my students need a teacher with a high level of commitment to mine and their growth academically, socially, and emotionally. My students, who are African Americans are two-and-a-half times more likely than whites to be killed by police. We are two-and-a-half times more likely to live below the poverty line. We are more likely to attend high-poverty schools — nearly half attend schools in which 75% qualify for free and reduced lunch. We are disproportionately punished. Black people makeup 24% of the public-school population but comprise 48% of students suspended. We are incarcerated at more than five times the rate of white people. In this pandemic, at three times the rate of White Americans, we are dying.
National Board Certification offers my students a teacher equipped to support the next generation, to advocate for those whose voices are silenced, and to rally against the bias and stereotypes that discourage the dreams and paralyze the potential of young people of color.
National Board Certification allows my students to learn more than their peers without Board-certified teachers and studies have also found that the positive impact of having a Board-certified teacher is even greater for minority and low-income students. I want to become a National Board Certified Teacher to change these statistics for my son, students, and their present/future communities
