My students need copies of the novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy. This project will give me a class set of novels that I can use with my students to study and practice literary analysis.
My students are awesome. They come from a diverse set of backgrounds and situations but they are good kids. We have a few military families, some upper-middle-class families, single-parent families, large families, etc. I have classes full of athletic students, motivated students, bookworms, struggling readers, non-native speakers, etc. We have nice neighborhoods surrounding us, rural communities, strip malls, access to a major city with a major university, and public housing in our district.
I like to think we are a typical American High School with typical American teenagers.
My Project
This project will provide my classroom with a set of novels that will be shared by all of my students and other English teachers in our school for many years.
These copies of The Road by Cormac McCarthy will be used to give students an opportunity to apply the literary analysis skills they have been learning to a longer work of fiction.
Students will develop an original thesis and write a literary analysis essay exploring themes, conflicts, characterizations, symbolism, etc. This project is designed to prepare students for the type of literary analysis required at the college level.
This modern classic by one of America's most notable authors was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction in 2006. This novel is being widely taught in High Schools and Colleges and most students find it extremely engaging. The subject matter is very timely and it raises a number of deep and interesting questions that students can think about and debate.
