Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from low income families but this does not deter them from having the will to learn and the desire to overcome challenges. They are unique individuals who come daily to school ready to learn and to be part of our school.
Our school is a Title 1 school with approximately 95% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.
Many of these students come from immigrant families who are seeking a better life. The low income/high poverty that surrounds them does not deter their spirit to learn. By providing different learning experiences, success in life will be attained. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with various obstacles, some stem from their home life while others stem from learning gaps. Despite the many challenges they face, I strive to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students have struggles that include lack of family support, language barriers and many were affected by Hurricane Harvey. An area I can make sure they do not lack in is equal educational opportunities.
My Project
This 4 day institute is a highly acclaimed and well known resource that as a writing teacher, I would benefit greatly from attending. Some of the topics that will be covered are the structures of expository writing, prompt analysis, introduction statement, revisions, and effective transitions. The training will cover the necessary content and manipulatives to carry the information into the classroom to make gains in our writings.
It is essential that students be able to communicate in oral and written forms.
Writing is a concept that my students struggle with. Being able to better equipped to guide them will help them gain confidence in their writing as they learn new strategies and techniques to bring their writings to life.
