My Students

I teach an extremely talented and unique group of fifth graders in Kentucky. They are both advanced program students and regular program students, and several of my students are from different countries.

My students are eager and excited.

They are creative and want to learn more. They are eager and seek knowledge on a daily basis.

We are considered a school with moderate poverty, but we do not qualify for additional state and government funds. Each of our at-risk students needs the opportunity to have the same resources as students at other schools.

My Project

“Who wants to become a writer? And why? Because it’s the answer to everything. … It’s the streaming reason for living. To note, to pin down, to build up, to create, to be astonished at nothing, to cherish the oddities, to let nothing go down the drain, to make something, to make a great flower out of life, even if it’s a cactus.”

—Enid Bagnold

I want my students to be great writers and be proud of their work! My students are always writing, whether for a portfolio piece, a writing contest or in preparation for our state writing assessment. It is important for my students to increase their vocabulary by learning new and rich words to replace the 'boring' words. If my students each had their own thesaurus, they could all look for 'The Right Word,' that word that enhances their writing.

Thesauri can be even be used to clarify the meaning of an unfamiliar word when its definition in a dictionary can't be understood. This can be particularly useful for a nonnative speaker, because the range of synonyms offered by a thesaurus might include at least one word that he or she already knows.
