My students need resources to help building their writing capacity. Grammar and writing are struggling areas and Common Core materials addressing these areas are needed.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Common Core puts the focus back on writing. However the practice has been neglected for many years and the students are lacking basic skills. The composition books and writing activity resources I am requesting will engage writing proficiency.
My students are so behind in writing and grammar.
Besides the neglect in the curriculum, technology hinders many of my students. They write how they text, and in a classroom setting, that spells disaster! Most of my students come from either single family homes and many are being raised by their grandparents or foster parents.
My Project
Since their writing and grammar skills are underdeveloped, it is my goal to get them back on track and correct the deficiency. I teach 9th grade English and this group will be the first to take a high stakes test that accompanies Common Core. The test has multiple writing assignments and quite frankly, without the additional help in writing and grammar, my students will struggle to pass. I also am preparing them for SAT and ACT assessments which they will take in a few years, and writing is assessed there as well. The material this grant will pay for is a step in the right direction to equip them with the resources for achievement.
As a teacher, I have longed to teach grammar and writing, however our curriculum hasn't focused on it and neither have our state assessments.
Now Common Core expects it and my resources are subpar. Please help me help them.
