My students need plastic clipboards, writing claws, a letter activity center, and other items to help them learn to print letters and numbers correctly and with proper pencil grip.
I teach at a high poverty elementary school in Honolulu, Hawaii. Students at my school come from many cultures and ethnic backgrounds. My students are 5 and 6 years old and they love to learn and experience new things in fun and exciting ways!
My school is about 50% military and 50% local students.
Due to our high military population, students transfer in and out frequently. Since school comprises a large part of a child's life, making my classroom a welcome place is an important factor in helping new students adjust to their new life.
My Project
Since many of my students will start school with no previous writing experience, I want to give them many opportunities and ways to practice. They can use the dough, mats, rollers, and "learn the alphabet" mats, to form the letters of the alphabet. The letter activity centers will be used for individual practice during center time.
Once we begin actually writing, my students can use the pencil grip "claws" to experience how to properly hold their pencil.
The clipboards will be used for writing practice when sitting on the carpet.
The items I have chosen for this project will help my Kindergarten students to become confident, successful writers!
