Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle School is the worst. At least that's how it feels when you are struggling through it. The average students are grappling with hormones and peer acceptance, while the average educators try desperately to teach reading, writing, and empathy.
But my students are not average.
They face poverty. They face hunger. They face a history of not going to college. They face a myriad of challenges outside our classroom doors. So inside our classrooms, my colleagues and I teach them despite their lack of readiness or resistance to learn. We have to teach them how to defy the odds and create good lives for themselves. At our AVID demonstration school, we all rise to the challenges, remaining committed to creating curious, empathetic, life-long learners.
My Project
All kids need to read and interact with quality literature in order to be successful outside the classroom. But they also need to see themselves in what they read to learn how to deal with life. Too often within a school budget, choosing relevant books in which they see themselves isn't an option for students.Yet, this is a necessary component of getting kids to fall in love with reading.
Our students deserve to love reading.
With these diverse choices of high interest novels, students will be able to connect with the characters and each other as they collaborate in literature circles.
