Our students are amazing here because they embrace diversity and see it as a strength. Every day a varied group of children enter our gates over looking inspiring white faced mountains. They range in age from 4 to 12 years old, and their economic back ground could be from getting free lunches to owning many rental properties here in town. My students speak over 7 different home languages including Spanish, Mandarin, Farsi, and Thai.
Even with all this diversity, we have more; for our school has one of the highest special needs student counts in our district--making it a unique place to grow as student.
Children may come to school with hearing, vision, physical development, autism spectrum, mental health, family, and attachment challenges, but they are supported here to meet their challenges with their strengths. Our school culture supports families and children where they thrive to overcome trials both social, emotional, and academic.
In an effort to support their continues efforts to grow as students, we would like to offer more low lexile reading books with higher maturity and content. This will help our 2-6th grade students practice a life time skill.
My Project
By providing choice books on a student's reading level they become more excited about reading and finishing a book. Having many different titles at varying levels help teachers and librarians direct children to books not only on their level but that they are actually interested in reading.
Our school library with the help of our PTO invested in about $400 of graphic novels last year, and saw our circulation of books go up 50% in our lower developmental level readers.
These were books they wanted to check out and explore. Then they became series they wanted to read. "No one ever chose their favorite book by it's reading level!" --Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer.
By helping our library meet the needs of over 150 students with developmental reading delays have more choices you are supporting reading. Supporting reading is one of the greatest influences on future school success. Thank you for helping up support reading.
