My students need appropriate reading materials that are at their level. We need subscriptions to DynaMath and Scholastic News. We need Map Skills and Just Write! Workbooks.
Our fourth grade students with emotional impairments are hardworking, creative, and caring kids. We are a school with one of the largest, lowest income populations in Boston. Although it may be a challenge to get to school some days, they come ready to learn in their own way.
Sometimes that means simply showing up and not walking out of class.
Other days it is helping a peer who is having a difficult time, completing classwork without reminders to stay on task, or being able to return to class after a crisis or incident.
There are times when adults who do not see these students on a daily basis would not recognize the hard work being put forth or the progress made. My students do not always make progress in the way typical students do. It is always happening and it is always wonderful to see.
My Project
Students in our 4th grade class are on different reading levels for various reasons. No one is reading above a 4th grade level. Out of the 9 students, we range from a grade one reading level to a 3rd grade reading level.
Having multiple genres of level appropriate reading materials will help our class improve reach their goals!
We need all the reading material we can get our hands on, the choices through Donors Choose are reliable to be high interest and the right level for the needs of my students.
Having materials students can bring home helps continue the good work they do in class and encourages family input.
