My Students
The students I am working with this year are intelligent young ladies and gentlemen with tremendous potential. They have endearing personalities, and as freshmen in high school are able to put life events into the proper perspective. The class in which I work with these students is titled “Numeracy.” It is a math intervention course for students who have struggled with math in the past, and have been identified as students who would benefit from some extra support in addition to their traditional Algebra 1 class. As a result of my students past math struggles, they constantly deal with damaged academic self-confidence. Their motivation varies from day to day, and most are coming from economically disadvantaged homes.
My Project
In addition to supporting my students with their Algebra 1 coursework, I’m trying to infuse the class with skills in financial literacy to help them see the purpose and relevance of math outside of the classroom. With the addition of financial literacy to the class, students will receive “paychecks” for their class accomplishments, as well as the classroom jobs they are “hired” for. They will also pay “bills” in the form of monthly desk rental and technology fees. Students will maintain a bank log where they document deposits and withdrawals and keep an updated balance.
The fun in the activity comes from being able to spend their classroom money.
And this is where your donation will go. I’d like to create a classroom “store” where students can spend their classroom earnings on things such as gift cards and snacks. In the time I have been a high school educator, these incentives often serve as worthwhile motivators for students to keep them working hard and engaged in classroom tasks.
I strongly feel that this financial literacy aspect of the class can motivate students to keep working hard while teaching students essential life skills. Stocking the class store with desired incentives is crucial because it gives students a goal and makes learning fun!
