The students I have the privilege to work with come from a variety of backgrounds and have a diverse range of abilities and needs. I work with students who have challenging circumstances at home, students struggling with truancy, and students who need connection with peers or other school faculty. I also work with students who simply want to chat.
Students check in with me when they need guidance as my job is to give everyone the opportunity to come out of a situation in a better place.
My office is a safe haven for students to come to during the day.
My Project
I am in my first week as the restorative justice facilitator in a high school in a mountain town in Colorado. My office currently looks like a conference room where one might expect a board meeting to take place--not currently an ideal setting for students coming to me for support to spend time. The bean bag chairs will help to give the room a more homey feel and a comforting place to sit. Some students I work with don't have a place they are comfortable being outside of school.
Students are excited to be able to help me make the room theirs with the chalkboard paint and the coloring table cloth!
This way, students who come into the room will have the opportunity to literally leave their mark. They get to help create their own place to spend time. The basketball hoop will help certain students transition into the room. It can redirect their focus so we can work through the situation they are coming to me for together.
