I teach in a multi-grade classroom (4-6) full of inquisitive and interesting 9-12 year old boys. Our students have a range of different needs, including one-on-one, adapted materials, extra support, and help with coping skills. All of our students are in our Day Treatment setting due to not being successful in a regular education classroom.
As with most boys of this age, their main focus is electronics and video games.
We are offering our students more hands-on activities that have actually cut down on their screen time. We have even heard, "I want to keep doing this experiment instead of reinforcement." This is a huge WIN!
Since we are a multi-grade classroom, we are always planning new lessons and new opportunities to meet our kids where they are at. Our kids come to us with very little and have very high needs. With all this, our attendance is high and their eagerness to learn is infectious!
My Project
Part of our core curriculum is learning about the solar system and planets. Our boys have asked to learn about Mars and the possibility of life on Mars.
Imagine doing experiment on dirt very similar to Mars!
Would life be sustainable on Mars? Could food be grown? Is there water? These and many more are just some of the questions that were asked and we hope to answer.
With your help, we can get these tools to do the experiments and research Mars. Not only will we earn about the solar system but also chemistry. Two for one!
