This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is full of energetic third graders with a wide variety of interests and needs. I am looking to create a classroom that feels like home to them since many of them go home to essentially nothing. These kids often need help focusing and staying focused while they are working. Since many of them struggle with reading, any kinds of hands-on activities are the most helpful in their learning process. These kids get so excited when something "clicks" or when they feel comfortable in the environment.
My Project
The vast majority of the students in my school are far below their grade-level in reading, and my students are no exception. Third grade is such a crucial year for reading mastery, so we have lots of work to do in my classroom. Most of the books in my classroom library are either at or around a third-grade level, meaning they do not reach a large number of my students. These lower-level readers will help my students immensely in learning to read and building confidence as a reader. The magnetic letters are SO helpful when teaching the kids sight words, as any hands-on work sticks with them more than just pencil and paperwork. I cannot wait to continue to watch my students grow as readers this year!
