Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in the South Bronx, one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. This proposal is for five students from my second grade class to go on a shopping trip after school to the children's section of Barnes and Noble in Uptown Manhattan.
Since October of this year, I have been tutoring the five lowest readers in my class in literacy after school, three days each week. They all started the year extremely far behind the rest of the class (two of them didn't even know the letters of the alphabet). As of May, all five of my students have made considerable progress in literacy, improving in reading and writing faster than almost all of the other students in my class, thanks to the extra work they did after school during our "Reading Club." I can also state with certainty that they feel much more confident and happy coming to school, and their motivation to read has increased tremendously.
Unfortunately, their access to books is currently limited to what is supplied to them at school; once the summer comes along, they will not have that access any more. All five of them come from poor families; they qualify for free lunch at our school. Therefore, they do not have books at home they can call their own. Supplying new books will provide them with a much-needed resource during the summer that most of the families in this country take for granted. On average, children in middle class families have 270 books in their home, while children in extreme poverty have one (usually the phone book or the Bible).
I want to reward these five children for the great job they have done by having a "Reading Club Celebration" at Barnes and Noble. They will each choose $50 worth of books from the children's section to take home. This will give them new books to read over the summer, so that their love for reading continues to grow. They will appreciate the books and the celebration, I guarantee it!
