My Students
My students are curious, hardworking and excited to learn. Given the chance, many would stay in my science class all day. We live in a rural community that has seen many jobs leave. As a result, important opportunities pass us by. I am fighting to change that.
My school serves approximately 1000 students in the 6th and 7th grade.
47% of our students receive free and reduced lunch, 13% are students with disabilities. I am lucky to be teaching them.
My Project
As a way to add life to our study of the weather, my students will use parafoil kites and anemometers to explore the wind first-hand. Working in cooperative groups, they will analyze wind patterns to determine the correct direction and time to launch their kites.
Imagine a group of happy students, outdoors, problem-solving, flying kites.
Can you think of a better way to experience wind? A good indicator of a successful activity is if it generates more questions than answers. Why does our kite fly and the others don't? Why does the wind change direction so quickly? Oh look, there's a hawk circling above. One of the group's goals will be to come back into the classroom with questions based on their experience. They will then classroom resources to find answers to those questions.
