Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

This group of students that I have this year brings me so much joy. Their eagerness to learn and their thirst for knowledge is impeccable. They have been able to tackle any task or assignment that I have thrown their way with the limited amount of resources that have been provided this year. I admire their grit and their ability to learn, despite my moments of frustration. They pick me up and inspire me to teach to the best of my abilities each day I walk into the classroom. When the politics that bound Education become too much as times, they remind me why I joined the profession and why I love what I do. Once again, these students are amazing and indeed my saving grace.

My Project

Our children are not defined through the negative stereotypes that have been placed on their lives or the generational curses attached to their age group. There are limited amounts of resources on my shelf that reflect the norm of challenges that my students encounter on a daily basis, and texts on realistic and authentic realities to probable solutions. I often speak about these resources, but the ability to place them in the hands of my students can do more powerful works than my words. Through the resources provided by you such as, "A Long Way Down, Dear Martin, and Stamped," all culturally relevant texts: my students will not only encounter characters that look like them, but they will be able to experience culturally relevant texts that they can connect to for a deeper understanding of comprehension, and mastery of standards. This can begin the move toward breaking down generational curses and pursing justice! There project will require them to come up with applicable solutions for some of the legal issues that adolescents their age face. They will present their findings in a formal setting.
