My 8th grade Special Education students need Purell to keep their hands clean for writing and doing math. They will use this daily when they enter the classroom. Also, my students need a HP Color Laserjet printer to publish their writing. My students need paper towels to clean up after lunch, gooey science projects, and general messiness.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 8th grade Special Education. My school is a public school in a high-need community; most students received free breakfast and lunch and are able only to purchase basic school supplies.
My students and school face insurmountable economic difficulties. Beyond the recent budget cuts (though those haven't helped the situation) and inherent problems in inner-cities across the nation, my students are surrounded by economic difficulties AND learning difficulties. Most have been told they are incapable of learning from a young age. Most KNOW they they are poor and feel the consequences of their societal position daily. Through ALL of this, my students show extensive interest in writing. They are eager to absorb the knowledge and wisdom of their teachers.
Hygiene is critical. My students suffer year-round from unclean living conditions; some come from shelters. It is imperative that they have clean hands to work with others, use classroom supplies, and not have to worry about the spread of common diseases inside the classroom. Publishing their work is essential. It is not enough to write something by hand. Eager students must be rewarded with the ability to type up their papers and print their work. Our motto, "Writing for others to read" will be fully actualized when they see their work printed like the poems they read on overhead transparencies - or the short stories they read in books. The printer also enables them to have worksheets directly from the Internet.
Your financial support is NOT like throwing money over a wall. You will be supporting individuals with names and faces. Yet, your money is as strong as stone in helping ME teach them. This materials will make the difference in the lives of my students. Thank you for your generosity of spirit. Grace and peace to you this day.
