Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The fiercely competitive world of higher academic learning is one my students are rarely prepared for. I'm an English teacher and I teach almost all grades of high school English. I'm currently teaching 2 sections of Senior English at the same high school I graduated from. My school is a high poverty school, but my students are generally interested in learning and most of them dream of going to college.

As an English major in college, I struggled with the required level of writing my instructors expected of me. As a tutor turned substitute teacher turned full time teacher, I've seen my students year after struggle with the same frustrations. Recently, colleges and universities have turned to higher levels of required writing to sift through the students to find the most capable and articulate. My students, while they are hard working and concerned, are not prepared to perform at this level. To combat the situation, I have turned my senior English course into a college level writing course alongside the literature they have to cover by the end of the year. I've shown them sample college and university syllabi to show them the kind of assignments and schedules they will be required to work with. They are all afraid of these requirements, but they have ardently worked through them. While many of my students are writing more than they have in their entire life, they are also struggling to meet the specifications of each essay assignment. Most formally written assignments are required to be typed. Most of these students lack the resources to print their essays so frequently.

I have already acquired some computers in my classroom from the media center, but I cannot provide access to a printer for my students. Most of them end up handwriting assignments and are not allowed the benefits of revision without the wasted time of rewriting these assignments in their entirety by hand. If I had a printer in my room, I could allow all of my students the opportunity to see their work in the format they'll need to get used to by the time they reach their next year of education. When my students have an opportunity to produce work that looks like all of the others, they don't have to deal with the insecurities they have about their work and can focus only on improving the skills they need to succeed.

As an adult, I've decided to return to where I came from to help those in a way I wasn't helped. When I see my students feel ready to quit and accept a life of complacency I know that it's not entirely their fault. They're not raised in a culture of higher learning and are afraid that they won't be able to compete. With your help, I can show them that competing as an academic does require some training and getting used to, but it's still a possibility.
