This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Thank you for taking a look! Greetings from Pennsylvania. I teach in an urban area that is surrounded by suburbia. My kids face challenges that a one digit change in a zip code would eliminate. I teach here because I believe your zip code should not determine your education. My second grade students want to learn! They are filled with wonder, questions, and a realization that they don't have it all - at home or at school. I love that at their age I can make a difference, and with your help the difference can be huge - and last a lifetime.
I know you remember singing the song "the thigh bone connected to the hip bone" - well, reading and writing are connected as well. My goal is to instill in my students a love of reading that will last a lifetime. I have students who have entered second grade reading at a Kindergarten level.
They need hands on activities to build their sight word vocabulary, as well as their reading and writing vocabulary. They want to take responsibility for their learning; they want to believe and trust they can do it on their own; they just need more tools to do it.
If I could add independent learning centers to our classroom I could offer my students the opportunity to take what I have taught them and try it on their own. Just like a toddler who shouts "myself" when he wants to do it alone, my students are shouting it out - they want to try it alone - and have the chance to keep trying until they get it right. Not a test, not another "fill in the dot" exam, just a chance to prove to themselves they can do it. These independent learning centers are small and portable - I hope to use them as a lending library as well. I have parents who want to provide their child with help - they just don't have the resources to make it happen.
My students make a difference in my life everyday. Your help will ensure that my students see a difference in their education - in their life everyday as well. Thank you for reading my note. Thank you for taking the time to make a difference.
