This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My Pre-K students are 3, 4 and 5 years old. They are brave and inquisitive learners, always willing to try something new. As a Pre-K educator I have an incredibly important role to ensure my students are successful as they transition to kindergarten. Kindergarten expectations are very different from when you and I were five and six years old. The expectations have risen in an attempt to prepare students for a successful life and job after their Pre-K -12 academic career. As an educator I must build the scaffolding so my students can meet and exceed those expectations.
My Project
We often take for granted the impact our fine motor skills have in our lives. From brushing our teeth and tying our shoes to writing that school absence note and signing our name. We all have those early learning opportunities to thank for these abilities. As a child our fine motor skills, strength and dexterity improved every time we put together a puzzle, built with small blocks or colored a picture. In my classroom I like to weave meaningful learning into fun, developmentally appropriate activities. Most young children do not want to strengthen their fine motor skills by repeatedly writing letters with a pencil. They would however enjoy using snap alphabet blocks to spell their name or strengthen their hand by using a drill to take out screws. After all, we all learn best when the experience is enjoyable.
