Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of our students are first generation Mexican immigrants, 46.2% classified as English Language Learners and 98.5% are economically disadvantaged. Several of our students come from homes which participate in state and federal assistance programs such as food stamps, welfare, the Women, Infant, Children (WIC) nutrition program, and subsidized housing and medical assistance.
Although my students face many challenges on a daily basis, that does not stop them from being happy and eager to learn.
The students at our school are recipients of a well-balanced curriculum. Courses are offered in every subject area: Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Technology, Art and Music. The instructional programs include academic core subjects at various levels, such as the Gifted and Talented, Bilingual, Special Education, and Dyslexia programs utilizing a variety of differentiated instructional methods to meet the needs of all students.
My Project
When a dyslexic child’s spelling ability falls below that of same-age peers, it can undermine his or her confidence and result in poor performance in school. It may affect both the amount a student writes and the complexity of their written work. Poor spellers sometimes avoid using words that are part of their spoken vocabulary out of a fear of making spelling mistakes. They can be reluctant to participate in group activities, especially those which involve writing on the board, and are less likely to take notes during lessons. As literacy skills are necessary across the curriculum, children who receive lower marks on homework and exams may develop a negative attitude toward school and learning and are at risk of suffering from low self-esteem.
With Pocket Spellers, speech to text software, coping strategies and classroom accommodations, spelling challenges can be overcome.
