Help me give my students a classroom library complete with books encouraging growth mindsets from all around the world embracing all cultures and diversities!
Teaching first grade has always been an exciting adventure to watch the students learn and grow from energetic kids to caring, compassionate, motivated students. I love that first graders always start the year full of hopes and dreams to meet new friends and explore new activities, alongside of learning how to read, write, and become amazing mathematicians. One of the best lessons we learn at the beginning of the school year is how we can all overcome challenges.
By teaching kids that they have the power to grow their minds through the power of YET, makes them feel as though they are in charge of their own learning!
Students who have a growth mindset believe that they can always improve and they bring a positive attitude to learning. On the contrary, people with a fixed mindset often give up when they are frustrated because they do not understand that they can improve, through hard work and dedication. Students with a fixed mindset are scared of failing because they do not understand how failures can, in fact, lead to more learning. Introducing students to the concept of a growth mindset now, can help foster their passion for learning for life!
My Project
Inspired by the popular mindset idea that hard work and effort can lead to success, a growth mindset library can illustrate fictional characters, stories, or exemplary biographies that bring to life the idea of a growth mindset - taking risks, demonstrating persistence and effort, understanding that mistakes are normal when we try hard things, and growing from those experiences. The books in each collection will provide content and examples for great classroom read alouds, discussions, and projects.
When students believe that dedication and hard work can change their performance in school, they grow to become resilient, successful students!
Even though our school may be starting virtually this year, our goals are still the same to create critically thinking, lifelong learners. Through the use of daily read alouds, book studies, and virtual discussions, our students will be able to overcome challenges not only in their distance learning experiences, but also in everyday life!
