Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students who are English language learners and have learning disabilities. They also come from families who struggle with paying bills and affording school supplies and books. Despite these challenges, my students bring many strengths to the classroom, including a passion for learning and a willingness to take risks as they acquire the building blocks of reading.
My students love math, science, computers, and art, and they love learning how things work.
They are curious about the world and are eager to improve their literacy skills.
My Project
This dictionary project will provide a Spanish-English dictionary to each of my bilingual students to use at home while doing homework with their families. Students will be able to share with their families the meaning of words that they are learning by looking them up in the Spanish-English dictionaries. They will write words that they look up with their families in pocket-sized notebooks and can keep these books for personal reference.
Students who have access to books and a dictionary at home will have access to the tools they need to do better on their homework and obtain the skills they need to be ready for college and a meaningful career.
Bilingual students will be empowered to learn new words and feel a sense of pride when they can share what they are learning with their families by using a Spanish-English dictionary to look up verbs, nouns, and adjectives. This project will provide students and their families a useful reference book that they can use throughout middle and high school. This project will provide a bridge for students who are struggling readers and writers. Students who have access to reference materials at home will be able to learn more words, which they will need throughout their education and lives. The power of words will surely help to transcend borders and connect generations to come.
