Help me give my students a new way to demonstrate mastery with a podcast studio.

Animated! Outspoken! Challenging! Tech-Savvy! These are a few words that describe my students. As a result of being born into and growing up in a tech-savvy world my students are always in a hurry to finish a task or to find the answer; unfortunately, sometimes the results are haphazard or the students move on to one assignment without having a complete understanding of the last task completed.
It is time to slow down!
The higher level thinking that is expected of this generation requires that we spend time making connections between ideas and sparking new thoughts based on previous assumptions. This thinking requires students to confidently engage in real discourse with each other and adults and although my students have much to say; my challenge is to give them instruction and experiences to provide them with the tools for critique and creative expression.
Students struggle with writing. Some students struggle with sharing their personal innermost thoughts within the safety of small groups. Podcasting, however, is a way by which students can partner with another student to share their insight about a character or a story's theme without the pressure of performing in front of a group.
Giving students the power of voice will have an impact on them that will last a lifetime.
The podcast studio will be used as a culminating assignment. After having read one of the following novels: All-American Boy, Night, Fahrenheit 451 or To Kill a Mockingbird, students will work with a partner and create a podcast from start to finish. Students will devise engaging questions to discuss the book with each other, edit the audio files, and create art for their podcast. Students will use the microphone kit to set up a studio in class, and use the microphones and the audio interface to record their shows. This lesson will not only create a safe space to share learning, and meet several core language standards but will also give them college & career readiness that will last for the rest of their lives.
