I look back and try to remember when and why I became a lifelong reader. I do remember the excitement after opening a new book and the satisfaction of when I reached its conclusion, ready to crack open a new experience. Books are gifts that are advantageous to adolescents in so many ways. So, being able to provide students with a good start with a high-interest classroom library, is the goal to begin the school year.
My students span from the voracious to the inquisitive to the reluctant, in terms of reading.
They come from all different backgrounds and abilities. But, I have seen how a book can make such positive changes in these young adolescents so by giving this group a head start before entering high school with the gift of books, it will certainly benefit them immensely. My students are certainly going to change the world for the better and reading such informative. inspirational, entertaining stories will only give them the push to becoming lifelong readers.
My Project
The high-interest books will continue to aid in the goal of creating lifelong readers; something that is so beneficial that one cannot overlook its importance. Reading opens so many doors and is so rewarding. Mental stimulation, increased memory, vocabulary expansion, decrease in stress, improved focus, and concentration are just some of the benefits. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy. I have created a reading “nook” where students gravitate to read and explore new worlds. Every student book that is placed in my library is carefully selected and in turn, treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind-I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
