Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The SAT test is always a big hurdle in my classroom. My students want to do well, but finding the time and resources to familiarize them with the test has been difficult. But now with the new format rolling out in 2016, my task just got that much harder.
My students try hard in my class - you can see it in their attention when I teach a lesson, you can see it in their concentration when I give an assignment, and you can see it in their homework that they turn in daily.
But I don't have the materials to instruct them fully on the new SAT format. This test is more challenging, with a different set of vocabulary than the lists I taught in the past. My materials will be obsolete by 2016, which is just around the corner!
My Project
I have seen a copy of this new book, Vocabulary Power Plus and I have seen it in action. I hunger now to get it into the hands of my kids. How can they compete with other students from other schools who can afford to pay for those SAT classes on Saturdays? So, as much as I am able, I try to bring those materials into my classroom. A class set of Vocabulary Power Plus would go a long way in providing that much needed advantage for my students.
Aside from getting them prepared for the new SAT, these books will also help them bring complexity and formality into both their class discussions and their essays.
Words have power; we know that. They can change the world. They can change lives.
