I teach at a very special school in a large urban district. What makes us special? Our students, of course! Our students love to read and they read a lot.
These readers have read from a fabulous canyon of fine literature.
They read from all genres. They have favorite authors. They discuss and write about their reading with passion. They join me in a good cry at the end of a particularly sad read aloud. These kids are crazy for books.
My Project
Any good reading teacher will tell you the secret to their success is rooted in their read-aloud time. It is the books we share together as a community that stays in our hearts and lingers in our minds. It is a time we come together as readers to laugh together, think things through, debate the issues, and yes, at times, cry. During read aloud it's about the story and our connection with other readers. Shared reading levels the playing field; giving all readers, no matter their level, equal access to the text. Read aloud is a sacred time in my school day. With that in mind, I have taken the BOOK A DAY CHALLENGE extended to teachers by the Nerdy Book Club. It challenges teachers to bring the joy back into read aloud by committing to read aloud a picture book aloud every day of the school year. Every. Single. Day.
Can you imagine the power of bringing 180 stories into the lives of children for them to enjoy?
Think of the opinions they might form and they discussions they'll have. I will be able to bring inmate texts representing the diverse backgrounds and lives of my particular students. You can help me tackle this BOOK A DAY challenge by sending my students these fabulous picture books.
