This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Choice has power! Flexible seating is not just another buzz word. The power of placement and reading has had a profound affect on the motivation of my young readers. During this COVID-19 pandemic, my students have often turned to reading to help handle their emotions and recharge their mindset. During our "Drop Everything and Read" (DEAR) time, my students have accessed parts of our classroom that are most comfortable. Right now, this means that the classroom floor, corners of the room, student desks, random chairs, and lying underneath desks are the safest options available. For many, this has also meant learning to make responsible choices and respect the expectations of our DEAR time.

My students are motivated and empowered to lose themselves in a good book when they are given the opportunity to choose the location.

The items on my list will enable students to have more choice and practice the power of sharing these precious spaces. The classroom carpet is designed with calming colors tones to keep students relaxed during both learning time and DEAR time. This carpet is also large enough to house all of my student bodies comfortably and safely. Do I have students that don't feel comfortable in smaller spaces? This carpet is for them. The floor seats I've selected will enable a more functional and comfortable library corner for reading, with backs that support young readers who are beginning their transition into upper elementary. Finally, the portable surf desks will allow students to access the power of reading at any location in the classroom.

I have seen the spark in my students when given the chance to choose and empower their own learning. I know that these items will motivate my young learners to grow and maintain their love of reading.
