This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Have you ever been teased? Well, unfortunately my students and I are teased everyday...in our classroom! That's right, we are taunted by a beautiful SMARTBoard (interactive whiteboard) in the front of our room...but we cannot use it because we have no projector to connect to it!
My students live just outside of New York City and attend a Title 1, pre-K through Grade 8 school.
Even though we are close to the City, many of our kids never leave their hometown. Our school is desperately trying to stay afloat in the midst of all the closings and pressure of the New York City Department of Education. My students have big dreams, but they need lots of encouragement and they thrive on the examples of students who came before them and have succeeded. Many of the kids receive free lunch and their families struggle to make ends meet. It's not unusual to have a student who doesn't have simple school supplies, or even a belt. Our school tries to broaden their worlds and give them experiences that they may otherwise not be exposed to.
My Project
With this projector, I will be able to plan lessons that the students can interact with on our SMARTBoard. I will be able to play movies, and Skype with students all over the world. Instead of the students working in small groups or one at a time around a small laptop screen or iPad screen, the whole class can participate together. I will also be able to teach the kids how to research effectively by demonstrating whole-class. In short, our lessons will come alive and the students will have a new way to gain ownership over their work. We will be able to publish whole-class projects online, as well as create PowerPoint presentations and our screen own videos. The possibilities are truly endless!

From Skyping, to research, to games, this project will allow us to grow as a classroom community, and a classroom family.
