Ms. Darcey from Oakland CA is requesting Instructional Technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need toner in their classroom printers so that teachers can print materials needed for instruction and students can print their work.
My students are navigating a world that is new, unfamiliar, and far from the place they have called home for their whole lives until very recently. They are brave and courageous scholars, learning English and engaging in the critical thinking skills and demanding content of their same aged peers. Many of my students have had very limited or no education in their home language.
My students are newcomers to the United States, having arrived to the United States sometime in the last year or two, and are learning English as a second or third language.
A majority of my students are from Central America or Yemen. Our middle school is a small school by design, located in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. We have a large English Language Learner population, about 45% of our school, and 92% of our population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. My students are incredibly hard workers and inspire me every day.
School sites in our district were hit with unexpected mid-year budget cuts, forcing our schools to make cuts to programs and supplies that we had already budgeted for. Right now, only three printers in our school have toner in them. So much of classroom instruction integrates the use of technology, however there is still the need to print essential materials for classroom instruction and to print out student work and writing to showcase it around our school. Our students deserve access to such a simple, critical resource, like functioning printers.
While teachers at our school are resourceful and innovative, our students deserve all of the materials that are essential for instruction, and their ability to print and showcase their work, and their teachers ability to print materials, is one of those essential needs.
Our students should be able to see their writing displayed in the hallways and be able to bring home their work to share with their families. Their teachers should not be prevented from providing the best instruction possible because of the inability to print a wonderful resource created on a computer or found on the internet. The hope is that this toner will last us through the end of the school year and ensure that we begin next school year with functioning printers. Our students shouldn't feel the impact of these budget cuts!
