As a teacher in a low income and high poverty school district, my students experience many challenges before they even enter my classroom door. To ensure that all of their learning needs are met, I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating. These 5 year olds are very eager learners and desire and deserve enhanced learning opportunities in order to meet grade level expectations.
My Project
This Grocery Stand will be used for play in my classroom. In my classroom, we have a daily time devoted to play! This is because education is seeing a play deficit. Play has declined steadily over the last 50 years. Free play has been replaced with structured activities and screen time. Research is showing that this play deficit promotes anxiety, depression, suicide, narcissism, poor attention skills, and loss of creativity, which is the soul of all innovation. In fact, the opposite of play is not work, it is depression. This is why I am trying to build play into my classroom by using play centers. My students will use this grocery stand as a place to pretend and play that they are employees and customers in a grocery store. Economics standards will also be practiced using this grocery stand. They can practice using money and buying and selling.
