Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In an effort to close the educational gap, I am trying to break out from the traditional way of teaching. Our student body consists of 99% Hispanic, 97% economically disadvantaged, 88% at risk of dropping out of high school, and 79% limited English proficient.
They have a hunger for learning and look forward to puzzles and challenges.
I want to help the students realize beyond their true potential though building their critical thinking skills in real world scenarios and experiencing science first-hand.
My Project
This HP OfficeJet 200 mobile printer will make it possible for my 5th grade students to have day-to-day access to a printing tool in the classroom. We’ve all heard the cliché, “a picture tells a thousand words”, but there is real value in using images to promote scientific content. Images help us learn, images grab attention, images explain tough concepts, and inspire. We are very visual creatures. A large percentage of the human brain dedicates itself to visual processing. Our love of images lies with our cognition and ability to pay attention. Images help us become involved.
With images, we are seeing the science, rather than standing on the outskirts.
The images help contribute to the storytelling process that can make science more engaging.Bright colors capture our attention because our brains are wired to react to them. Our vision senses are by far our most active of the senses.
We have cameras, but we need a mobile printer to make our dreams a reality. Students will take pictures of real-world science and print out the pictures to create visual learning posters that will be placed in our school. Students will also be able to document and print out experiments, change over time, and organism growth.
By implementing photography to print, my students will begin to see themselves as true scientists and experience worlds that were otherwise beyond their reach. Images are a vital part of science communication, and shouldn’t be cast out in favor of long blocks of text. In order to break down the often complex messages of science, we need the help of visuals.
