My students need math tools--base ten blocks, place value dice, transparent color counters and ten frames to help them "see" math while doing it and help them understand the relationships between numbers and how powerful they can be.
Students need to be able to see numbers and understand the power of their combinations to help them develop a strong number sense. This will allow them to use a variety of strategies that help with both addition and subtraction. This sets to the foundation for successful reasoning in the real world.
My second graders attend a school that serves approximately 170 students from grades K-2.
Students come eager to learn when given the environment that shows them the importance of reasoning in all areas. It allows students to be challenged, think beyond and show what they have learned and how it can be used in real life. Students with individualized education plans come into second grade with various learning abilities that allow them to grow.
My Project
The power of reasoning in math comes from seeing and doing. The resources requested in this project will allow my students to develop number reasoning. The math tools will help them visualize number relationships and help them apply them beyond the tools. The base ten blocks, place value dice, transparent color counters and ten frames will be given as an introduction to learning the math concepts and eventually taking them away slowly enabling them to visualize the numbers. The understanding that they students develop will give them the confidence they need to solve operations and problem solving. These tools will help with the process of learning.
Second graders must be prepared to reason mathematically.
The deep understanding through effective instruction using various tools will give them this ability. Each individual students is able to make progress mathematically and make important connections to the real world.
