As a teacher in a low-income and high poverty school, I know my students face several challenges in and out of the classroom. Despite this, I am always looking to inspire them and provide them with the best meaningful learning experiences. Many come from single parent homes, they receive little home support with homework, no access to computers, and receive free and reduced lunch.
My main goal is to give them the best learning experience during the school day.
Every student deserves to be inspired and given the opportunity for academic excellence.
My Project
A listening center can improve a child's reading skills such as critical thinking, comprehension, and vocabulary. I want my students to experience reading in a variety of ways. I do read-alouds, we read in small groups, independent silent reading, and I even pull texts up on the internet for us to watch and hear stories come alive. But, we are lacking a way for students to listen to stories during centers.
A listening center can fuel children's imaginations while improving reading skills and vocabulary.
There are many benefits to listening to audio books. Audio books develop listening skills and quiet concentration. Audio books help you understand complex language. Audio books teach you how to hold people’s attention when telling a story which is an important skill for life. If English is not your first language, you will benefit from hearing clear pronunciation and native speech patterns. Audio books are fantastic for dyslexics. Listening to a book read brilliantly helps you learn punctuation, enunciation, and emphasis, all of which bring out the meaning of a text.
A listening center will allow my students to experience a variety of literature, poetry, and many other genres, they will be able to understand text above their reading levels, and will simply enjoy reading time.
