Students in my classroom come from low-income families in Chinatown, Manhattan of NY. My classroom is an ICT class with a mix of English Language Learners and students with Disabilities. My students all have different learning needs and academic levels. It becomes difficult planning activities for them to work on individually or to collaborate in small groups. Elementary school years are very important. A strong foundation should be implemented for these students. My students' small accomplishments mean the world to them; it helps them boost their self-confidence and self-esteem.
My Project
Graphic novels will help struggling readers as well as English language learners and students with special needs become stronger readers. They will be be able to discuss what happens in each novel as well and make inferences and predictions through the visuals.
Students will build stronger reading skills and become more engaged readers when reading graphic novels.
Book discussions will be more meaningful and students will be more focused when reading independently. Students will also build their reading stamina when reading graphic novels. The enjoyment of reading will show when they are excited to share what they have read with their friends and classmates!
