My students need one stackable shelf organizer, and high-interest books including Fangirl, All American Boys, The Plain Janes, A Wrinkle in Time, Everything I Never Told You, Bone Gap, The Future of Us, Looking for Alaska, Twisted Cut, and The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
I teach at an alternative school in a small suburb of Denver. Our school is mostly comprised of boys (they outnumber girls by about 7/3.) The school is about 50% White and 50% Hispanic. One of our school's goals for the new academic year (as well as one of my personal teaching goals) is to increase the amount of students who read for PLEASURE. It's well known that the more that students read, the better they will read, write, and speak. This project will allow me to build a classroom library full of books that students have requested and that students will enjoy reading.
My Project
I firmly believe that with time set aside for independent reading along with books that they love, students will understand how reading can enhance their lives and their futures. We need reading materials for our classroom library including one stackable shelf organizer, and high-interest books including Fangirl, All American Boys, The Plain Janes, A Wrinkle in Time, Everything I Never Told You, Bone Gap, The Future of Us, Looking for Alaska, Twisted Cut, and The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
I am dedicated to not only improving my students' literacy skills, but providing them with a healthy pass time.
With so many boys, it is challenging to find titles that interest them. Last spring, I polled my students on what types of books they would be interested in reading. I even gave them time to browse the internet to read about new books. By giving them a voice and a say in the matter, they are becoming excited at the thought of a brand new library full of titles they chose.
Many of my students have challenges and obstacles outside of school, but books can be a healthy escape from their daily lives. By finding books they connect with, they will discover a tool that will help prepare them for life after high school. Reading and literacy is so important, and these books will allow my students to strengthen these skills.
