Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of our students are English Language Learners. They are the first generation to be in school in the United States. Some have overcome unimaginable challenges at such an early age. They are energetic, curious, hopeful kids with whom I get the privilege of learning every day.
Because of their language skills or harsh experiences, some do not know that they have something important to share, even if the rest of us do know.
My school is an arts integration school with students in Pre-K through 6th grade. We serve over 850 students, all of whom receive free lunch. Our staff works diligently to get to know our kids' interests, learning styles, and talents so that school can be a place they are comfortable and succeed. Our library is no exception. The students know that the library is a safe place where people read for different purposes, question, explore, imagine, wonder, discover, learn, share ideas, discuss, and create.
My Project
My English Language Learners need as much exposure to words and their use in the language as possible. They need opportunities not only to hear words read to them, but to say them out loud and play with them in different ways. These magnets and toy figures will allow them to retell stories or tell their own with their voices and their hands, using their varied learning styles. This will help the words and concepts stick with them so they are recognizable and understandable when they are reading.
Through this "play" my students will learn the power of words.
It will help them gain confidence in expressing themselves. They will learn that not only are the ideas in stories and books important, but so are their voices. Their words mean something. They have something to share.
This art of storytelling is a fun and flexible way for my students to build their language skills. They will extend what they read and hear in library books while learning concepts across the curriculum in our arts integrated school.
