The Plight of Undocumented Workers: Past and Present
Help me give my students choice--at a variety of ability levels--to make connections between modern undocumented workers with those we study during Industrialization and the Progressive Era.
As a magnet school, students come from a variety of cultures and backgrounds that represent the entire county. The abilities and the needs of my students are very diverse: I have students with housing and food insecurities, students with learning disabilities, students with worries about parents being deported, and students labeled as academically-gifted.
Incorporating reading materials that meet the different needs and interests of my students is a key to engagement, developing historical empathy, and improving academic success.
This is a challenge when some students read 5 grades below and some 5 grades above their peers. Funding this project will give culturally-relevant and accessible material to all of my students, while still engaging and challenging the ideas of the highest-achieving students in my classes.
My Project
These books bring the experiences and voices of modern, undocumented workers front and center in our classroom. 30% of my students identify as Lantinx, making this source material culturally and historically-relevant to my history classes. This material is engaging and accessible to all students at varied ability levels.
Through literacy, this project allows students to connect the experiences of immigrants today with those who flooded into the United States during the 19th century.
It promotes empathy for the experiences of immigrants who share the same dreams as those from our past.
