Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On the playground playing tag, teether ball or soccer, or in the classrooms leaning in solving math problems together, are students born in Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Tonga, Guam, the Philippians, Samoa, as well as 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation Nevadans of Caucasian, Mexican and African American descent. My school is a Title 1- Pre K- 5th surrounded by low income apartments, trailer parks and rentals. We have about 450 students, 100% are free/reduced lunch. Sadly, despite the hard work of the teachers and students we have a 30% chronic absenteeism problem.

My students are literally the definition of globalism in a microcosm.

They represent the best of Nevada. They work hard and play hard. They love learning new things and sharing their ideas with others.

The pandemic has hit our families hard. We recently lost the father of 3 of our students to Covid-19. Families have suffered multiple losses, economic hardship and emotional trauma. Despite all this, our students come to school, ready for the adventure of learning with friends and mentors.

My Project

MCT believes in the importance of access, the power of creativity, and share the school's commitment to excellence. MCT strives to transcend any barriers such as language, culture, financial resources, and unique needs to transform lives by actively engaging people in the arts.

Virtually or in person their team of touring artists, (aka Tour Actor/Directors), cast our students in a children’s musical which they perform after just six days of rehearsal.

They will also teach three theatre workshops during the week, thus bringing even more students into the MCT experience.
