My Students
Our school and community have grown astronomically in the past 20 years. Formally a small, rural school for the children of local fishermen and farmers, we now serve families from diverse social and economic backgrounds as well as a burgeoning immigrant population. Nonetheless, our school has maintained a strong identity and sense of community.
My new students will be scientists, writers, explorers, readers, mathematicians, and artists from many different cultures.
Many are world travelers and some have never left the state. In our classroom, we are growing into a community of learners, ready to share our thoughts and wonders on a myriad of topics, but also open to the perspective of others. This year, I am teaching a cohort of 100% remote students. They need books in their hands everyday to develop their literacy skills.
My Project
I currently teach a cohort of completely remote first graders. It is difficult to build a virtual community of readers and learners without the shared experiences of in person classes. Sharing favorite books and characters, like The Pigeon and Piggie and Gerald is one way to connect students.
This collection of books will be used to create a lending library for my remote students so that they can have the experience of reading and rereading their favorites and provide a touch of normalcy to their very disrupted school lives.
