The Picture Book A Day Challenge!

My students need to experience the benefits of reading a picture book a day plus new bookshelves.

My Students

The students in my classroom are unique, energetic and mind-blowing little individuals. They are creative, yet organized; fun, yet studious. In a word, they are amazing. I am blessed to work with them, teach them, guide them and ultimately, learn from them.

I teach in a fantastic school in the city of Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Most of my students are from low-to-middle-class, hard-working families. Our community is tremendous when it comes to taking part in their children's learning experiences. We are proud Gremlins!

My Project

The power of literature, specifically through picture books, is amazing. I'm challenging myself and my students to take part in the Picture Book A Day Challenge this year. We need your help to build our library to undertake this project. Please consider the following:

“The importance of reading aloud to children on a daily basis can’t be overestimated.

The U.S. Department of Education Commission on Reading took into account over ten thousand studies and found that the most important activity for building the skills and background for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children (Anderson, Hiebert, Scott, & Wilkinson, 1985). Children who are read to are usually the very best readers in the classroom, and they acquire large vocabularies, write well, and do better in other subject areas, as well. - Lori D. Oczkus, 2012, Best Ever Literacy Survival Tips

The benefits of Picture Book Read Alouds include time to enjoy class, build classroom community, develop empathy, social emotional learning, more chances to include diverse stories, practice critical reading and analysis of books, include a variety of topics in (and outside) of the curriculum, equalize access to text for all students, enhance listening skills, create joy for the reading experience and model fluency.

Your donation will help to build our classroom library. We already have over sixty amazing, diverse and inspiring texts. Your donation will help complete the library so that we have immediate access to a wide array of literature on a daily basis. It will also help to house these precious materials since we've asked for two new bookshelves.

We appreciate your donation and can't wait to share our stories with you.
