Our wonderful first graders are always eager to learn and they try their very hardest each day. The biggest challenge is ensuring that they are engaged and that I am preparing them well for the future. By having a choice in class to use seating that matches their learning style it grants them great autonomy and a choice to advocate for their own learning style.
In order to enhance students’ learning experience,we try to offer a variety of seating choices from lap desks, stand up desks, yoga pillows, yoga balls, wobble stools and crate seats. Unfortunately, not all students have access to the seats because of our numbers.
My Project
Our students come from a variety of home with a variety of backgrounds. One thing they all have in common however is a need for alternative seating that allows them to move as they learn.
With the wiggle boards and wiggle stools first graders will be allowed to sit at their seats and listen to instruction and engage in group activities while also being allowed to move as they need.
The stools will also allow alternative seating at the counter for when students are doing group work, which occurs frequently in 1st grade classrooms, and usually involves small groups and collaborative work as a team. Having an opportunity to work at the counter helps us utilize our classroom space and spread out.
